Our blog series on technology trends to watch in 2020 continues with a look at the Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity measures. Last month, we covered the IoT, the business benefits of the trend, and security threats it faces. We also took an in-depth look at cybersecurity during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October. Let's take some time to focus on how IoT and cybersecurity measures will evolve and continue to play a major role in the technology landscape.
IoT has changed not only the way we work, but also the way we live. We are more connected than ever before and have greater access to information at our fingertips. This increased connectivity creates more opportunities for information to be intercepted and exploited by hackers.
Manufacturers are not required to adhereto uniform cybersecurity guidelines, making IoT vulnerable to cybercriminals. Compounding the problem is the fact that many IoT devices are developed with almost no security built into them. Devices are sent to market with security and device updates as an afterthought in order to meet demand.
In order to improve IoT security, legislation has been introduced which would impose security guidelines on companies working with the government. The Internet of Things Cybersecurity Improvement Act aims to improve security standards for government devices. By establishing some defined security guidelines for government devices, the hope is that the entire IoT market would follow suit and implement the standard.
Organizations like the IoT Cybersecurity Alliance are forming around the concept of developing a common set of security practices to bring regulation to the industry. Security alliances within the private sector are forming as well to help influence and bring change to IoT security.
Though more formal regulation is needed to establish a governing standards body for the IoT security space, the need for cybersecurity measures related to IoT is recognized as an emerging technology issue to be addressed.
IoT and additional cybersecurity measures will be a trend to watch in 2020 and well into the future of the digital space.
